Impact The Outcome: Reclaiming Community

Impact the Outcome: Reclaiming Community Community (IORC) is a 6-part workshop series open to all youth (14-29) who self-identify as racialized and from priority Toronto communities.

IORC will bring racialized youth voices forward to policy makers and researchers so they can support youth in the prevention of violence and radicalization more effectively and efficiently. This project will also contribute to building an evidence base, along with local capability and capacity, for improving the ability of adults and youth to work in partnerships to counter radicalization to violence.

YOUnity March

The YOUnity March raised awareness against domestic abuse. We marched from Old City Hall to Regent Park, as we wanted this journey to end domestic abuse from stricter legislation, down to Youth Gravity's home in Regent Park. Following the march, we held a gathering to provide a platform for people to interact with organizations working against domestic abuse and services that work to support victims of domestic violence. Organizations such as The Redwood, Reclaim Your Voice, White Ribbon, Metrac and many more attended and speakers such as Farrah Khan, Reese Zigga Zigga, and more who have dealt with domestic abuse spoke about their experience. This event has been brought to you by Youth Gravity in partnership with Building Roots.

Word Up With Moss Park

Word Up With Moss Park is monthly event in partnership with Building Roots, that is offered in the heart of Moss Park, at the Me to We Global Learning Centre. Word Up with Moss Park is an event for youth to open the world of poetry through a well experienced artist each month. They also also get to share their own work and come up with slam pieces on the spot in accompaniment with great food and a warm and welcoming environment.

Community Potluck

The Community Potluck was an initiative that we put together to celebrate the diversity in the community, as well as offer delicious food to those at the Council Fire Native Cultural Centre. The mission of our event was to build a relationship among residents from all walks of life and celebrate the diversity.

International Womens Day March
Regent Park Recyc-Olympics

In the community of Regent Park we found that there was a lack of awareness regarding recycling. So we decided to create an event in Regent Park that would motivate people to practice the 3R’s in the most amusing way possible. We had games, scavenger hunts, and delicious food, with a gathering game afterwards. There were also extraordinary prizes such as Canada’s Wonderland and Ripley’s Aquarium tickets, that were made possible by the grant from the City of Toronto.

Share The Warmth

Youth Gravity wanted to share the warmth for the giving time of holidays in winter of 2016, and we decided to put together a drive to give those in need a proper holidays. This drive was not limiting to what we were looking for; we collected items from food products to clothes, and books, and hygienic products, as well as make up for those who use it to boost confidence for those who find it helpful. We donated all the donations collected to a local women’s shelter. We have raised over thousand of clothing articles along with hundreds of hygiene products.

Our 1st Event: Run The Talk

"Run the Talk" is Youth Gravity's first ever workshop (or event) focusing on mental health awareness in adolescents going to high school. With 1 in 5 Canadians experiencing a mental illness; 70% of mental health problems onset during childhood or adolescence, Youth Gravity strived to provide a platform for teenagers to talk about the stresses during highschool i.e  Academics, familial problems etc. In the workshop, motivational guest speaker, Peter Tolius, shared his experience with mental health, students shared their own stories and worked together to make DIY stress balls. The event was very successful. We had about 40 participants from ages between 13-18, different backgrounds. The purpose of this event was to build a safe space for youth to come in and talk about their mental health while being inspired by the story of our speaker and learn how we can support each other.
